First impressions
The moment you drive through the gates of Amaroo Bangalow, there’s an immediate sense of calm. The winding driveway opens to sweeping views of rolling hills and carefully regenerated landscape. You’re greeted by manicured gardens, tranquil water features and the elegant architecture of the pavilions and cabins, which sit seamlessly within the landscape. It’s the kind of first impression that feels both luxurious and grounding – a place where five-star comfort meets the raw beauty of the Byron Bay hinterland.

The retreat
Balaka features three architecturally designed cabins, a loft-style unit and a pavilion for gatherings. Whether booking a single cabin for a cosy escape or reserving all four accommodations for a group experience, you will have exclusive access to the entire property and its facilities. No other guests will be staying on the property during your stay. Balaka at Amaroo Bangalow can accommodate up to eight adults, six children and two small pets (subject to application) within the fully fenced property. Perched high on the hinterland ridge, the retreat sits on 86 hectares of breathtaking farmland that boasts panoramic views of rolling hills and spectacular sunsets.

The cabin
The cabins at Amaroo Bangalow are modern yet cosy retreats, designed to frame sweeping views of the hinterland through floor-to-ceiling windows. Each space features open-plan living with a fireplace, kitchenette and private deck, plus plush bedrooms and spa-style bathrooms with organic amenities. Thoughtful touches like skylights, espresso machines and curated finishes make the cabins feel both luxurious and homely. It’s the perfect balance of five-star comfort and a deep connection to nature.

On my plate
The Bangalow region is a haven for food lovers. Expect exceptional coffee, inventive seasonal menus and restaurants that blend regional produce with global flair. One standout spot is Ciao, Mate!, a compact Italian gem on Byron Street serving wood-fired pizza, pasta and a curated mix of Australian and Italian natural wines in a romantic setting.

Highlights
The heart of the Amaroo Bangalow property, the Pavilion, offers exceptional facilities. These include a commercial-grade kitchen, a 14-person indoor dining table, a wood-fired pizza oven, a BBQ, a fire pit, and a heated plunge pool. This is where feasting meets intentional connection. For those who prefer indulgence without the effort, the concierge handles everything from pantry stocking and in-house massages to transfers and curated local dining recommendations.

I wish I could take home…
Although I would have preferred never to leave, there were so many special little luxuries that made my stay especially memorable. I would have loved to have taken home exceptional features like the espresso machine, the cosy fireplace, the soft robes and the Mukti Organics toiletries.

Staying in
There’s something magical about staying in at Amaroo Bangalow, curled up by the crackling fireplace while the rainforest hums quietly outside. The fire casts a soft golden glow across the cabin, making the stylish space feel even more inviting. A glass of wine in hand, a good book or simply the company of loved ones – it’s the kind of moment where time slows down. Outside, the cool hinterland air lingers, but inside it’s all warmth, comfort and contentment. The fireplace isn’t just a feature; it’s the heart of the cabin, turning a stay into a cocoon of pure relaxation.

Stepping out
At Amaroo Bangalow, you’re surrounded by nature and luxury at every turn. Wander through regenerated rainforest and eucalyptus groves, spot koalas, wallabies and vibrant birdlife, or enjoy peaceful moments by the creek. The Pavilion is the heart of the property, with a wood-fired pizza oven, fire pit and a heated plunge pool perfect for gatherings. Guests can collect fresh eggs, taste honey from the beehives or simply relax in hidden nooks with sweeping hinterland views and star-filled skies.

The accolades
Amaroo Bangalow officially opened its doors to guests in September 2024, marking the beginning of its journey as a luxury eco-retreat in the Byron Bay hinterland. Approaching their first anniversary, I can see many awards and accolades in their future.
Celebrity sightings
There have been no confirmed visits from famous individuals at Amaroo Bangalow, which speaks to its quality as a secluded, discreet retreat. If you’re looking to highlight its appeal for high-profile guests, the emphasis could be placed on privacy, exclusivity and the seamless integration with nature.

Insiders’ tips
To make the most of your stay at Amaroo Bangalow, start your mornings with coffee on the deck as the mist rises, and collect fresh eggs for breakfast. Take time to wander the walking trails where you might spot wallabies and black cockatoos, then unwind by the fireplace or plunge pool with a good bottle of wine. Don’t miss a picnic by the creek and be sure to stay up late at least once – the stargazing here is unforgettable.

Green thumbs up?
Designed with sustainability front of mind, Amaroo Bangalow was built on regenerated farmland. The owners, Mike and Cathy Tomkins, have restored the land by planting around 45,000 native trees and collaborating with local conservation groups to foster biodiversity. The retreat features eco-conscious infrastructure such as rainwater tanks, extensive solar panels and natural building materials that embrace both style and environmental responsibility.
Final verdict
A stay at Amaroo Bangalow is pure magic – a blend of luxury, tranquillity and connection to nature. Thoughtful touches, fresh local produce and the chance to truly slow down make it an unforgettable escape you’ll wish you could take home with you. I can’t wait to go back and stay with my entire family… including the furry kind.
