20. Admire historic automobiles in St Moritz
Part-time Engadin resident and full-time bon vivant James Patrick McLaughlin details the attractions of the International Concours d’Elegance in St Moritz.
“What makes ICE one of the most unique travel experiences is the juxtaposition of the incredible selection of historic automobiles on show against the stunning backdrop of St Moritz. To see so many fantastic cars on the ice, to feel the excitement of them doing laps on a track that only a few days before was the domain of a different sort of horsepower – actual horses, during White Turf – and to see all of this in one of the chicest settings on Earth? Pure magic.
It’s hard to single out my most memorable ICE moment, there have been so many, but maybe the coolest was last year. You see, it snowed so much in 2024 they had to basically cancel almost all the ‘on-ice’ activities. However, a bunch of intrepid gents and ladies made their way up to the Olympic Bob Run for an impromptu gathering… and sitting next to me for most of the afternoon was Prince Michael of Kent, my sartorial hero. But truly, every year that I attend produces lots of magical moments. The whole event is a magical moment.”

Part of the Norfolk Island National Park, it’s an excellent hiking spot, with timber-ladder paths crisscrossing the rocky surface, a crevassed Mars-scape that could be a movie set.
Then dive into the waters of Bumboras Beach to brave the rocky entry to be rewarded with the company of green turtles in water that is unbelievably clear on a classic snorkelling expedition. Post swim, take to the ‘High Tea by the Sea’, served on the neatly clipped clifftop lawns of Forrester Court, arguably the Norfolk Island’s most luxe accommodation. For those who love wildlife, few travel experiences will match watching a limber lemur leap from tree to tree – all the while knowing it is found nowhere else on Earth. Travel here with Abercrombie & Kent and you’re likely to spot some of the other 11 species of lemur as you wander through the rainforest. Bamboo lemur, common brown lemur, diademed sifaka and black and white ruffed lemur, to name but a few. The forest is also home to satanic leaf-tailed geckos and five chameleon species. While the lemur’s loud call often competes with the croaking and chirping of frogs.
Twitchers can gaze skyward beyond the canopy for the velvet asity, blue coua and nuthatch vanga. Head further south and you’ll be able to walk among the ancestral tombs of the Antandroy tribe, meeting the local tribespeople who live in the arid, spiny desert peppered with 500-year- old baobabs, where lemurs are never far behind.
